I selected to support the following organizations for my Life of Service Gift. The first organization is the Sacramento Food Bank. I live in Davis, California and saw the need to help people outside the Bay Area with essentials like food. The Sacramento Food Bank is the largest provider of food and basic human needs in Sacramento County.
The second organization I selected as my family lived and raised our kids, in Pittsburgh, PA for many years before coming to CZI, and the winters could be brutal. We were fortunate enough to simply turn on the heat. However, many people, and even more now with the effects of the pandemic, cannot afford to do the same. The Dollar Energy fund provides people with assistance in paying their utility bills in a unique model that leverages a dollar for dollar match from the utility companies.
Given the immediate pandemic and the issues surrounding it, we have focused our giving and our time toward helping people get through the pandemic as best as they can.
Being a scientist, I have always been interested in getting and keeping more people into STEM fields, and in particular, women. Much of our family’s personal giving has gone to this area. However, given the immediate pandemic and the issues surrounding it, we have focused our giving and our time toward helping people get through the pandemic as best as they can. While much of the CZI Science work focuses on the scientific aspects of the pandemic, like identifying drugs and diagnostic tests that can help with COVID-19 infection, outside CZI, we have been focused on helping people with the necessities of everyday life.
