Introducing Along: a Tool Designed to Help Teachers Make Students Feel Seen and Heard

Education Technology

Using evidence-based practices from the fields of learning science and human development, we bring together leading researchers, software developers, students and educators to build tools that help teachers differentiate learning experiences for every student.

We partner with Gradient Learning to build tools for educators and students. CZI’s partnership with Gradient Learning is threefold:

  • Experts in learning science and human development at CZI work closely with staff at Gradient Learning to ensure the educational approach and resources are supported by the latest research.
  • CZI’s technology team leads the ongoing development and improvement of the Summit Learning Platform and Along, working as a technical service provider to ensure the tools support teacher and student needs.
  • CZI provides grants to Gradient Learning to help them provide both the Summit Learning program and Along for free to schools across America.

Summit Learning

Our technology team builds tools that help Summit Learning teachers differentiate instruction to meet the needs of every student. This includes dashboards that provide grade-level and subject matter reports on academic progress, as well as a collaborative hub where teachers and specialists can connect on student support needs. Along

Along is a digital reflection tool we developed to help teachers make each of their students feel seen and understood. Built in response to educators’ needs, and with the support of researchers, Along lets teachers and students check-in one-on-one via quick videos, audio or text messages, enabling students to open up about who they are and what's really on their mind, away from the pressures of their peers. Building the best learning experience – for every kid

Our funding model allows us to put the student’s experience above all else and not be constrained by market pressures. We want to help transform classrooms so that every student gets the individualized support they need. We partner with learning scientists, human development experts, and educators to build a product that will work for all students and teachers across a wide range of skill levels, readiness, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Preparing students for life beyond school

We believe that students need to learn more in school than what is measured on standardized tests. Our tools help students set and track progress towards short- and long-term goals, make plans, demonstrate mastery when ready, and reflect on their learning with mentors. Through projects, students work with their teachers to apply knowledge, concepts, and skills to real-world scenarios they’ll encounter in life after school.

Empowering teachers

We work with the Summit Learning Program to build tools that allow teachers to customize instruction to meet each of their student’s individual needs and develop deeper relationships with their students. With the relevant data and resources, teachers can provide specific, actionable, and timely feedback that helps students grow. Our tools also support training and ongoing professional development for teachers to support them in the transition away from an approach largely centered on whole-classroom lectures.
