Grants

The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative makes grants to organizations working in support of our missions in Science, Education, and Justice & Opportunity – as well as giving directed to our local community. Grants are awarded via three funding entities: the Chan Zuckerberg Foundation, a 501(c)3 private foundation; the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative Donor-Advised Fund (DAF) at the Silicon Valley Community Foundation; and Chan Zuckerberg Advocacy, a 501(c)4 organization.

Grants disclosed from the Chan Zuckerberg Foundation and the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative DAF are retroactive to January 2018. See additional information below on the disclosure timeline for Chan Zuckerberg Advocacy giving. Going forward, this database of our grant giving will be updated annually. Exploratory Grants

Outside of grantmaking that is tied to the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative’s current mission and program goals, CZI also makes exploratory grants, or non-primary investments that are short-term and exploratory in nature. A total figure for exploratory grants will be updated annually. In 2018, we awarded $149,000 in exploratory grants aimed at understanding potential new areas of giving.

Giving from Chan Zuckerberg Advocacy, a 501(c)4 organization

Unlike charitable donations from a 501(c)3, some donations from a 501(c)4 are subject to additional local, state, and federal reporting requirements. We update our grants from Chan Zuckerberg Advocacy, our 501(c)4 entity, to align with all applicable local, state, and federal public disclosure requirements (including our annual IRS Form 990 federal disclosures). Grants disclosed from Chan Zuckerberg Advocacy are retroactive to January 2018.
