CZI’s Science Diversity Leadership (SDL) program aims to recognize and further the leadership and scientific accomplishments of biomedical researchers who — through their outreach, mentoring, and teaching — promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in their scientific fields.

Meet a few SDL grantees committed to growing the STEM workforce while advancing biomedical research and serving as an inspiration for the next generation of scientific leaders.

“Investments like Science Diversity Leadership will put scientists from so many different diverse backgrounds in leadership roles,” says Monkol Lek, assistant genetics professor at Yale University. “And when we’re in leadership roles, we can act as role models for young scientists — whether it’s in elementary school, high school, college — so they have someone to look up to and say ‘yeah, I can do that.’”

By providing research funding that celebrates and rewards mentoring, the Science Diversity Leadership program supports early-to-mid-career faculty at U.S. universities in conducting crucial biomedical research that advances science and their careers as they continue their mentoring and service activities that are essential for growing the next generation of scientists.

CZI is committed to supporting representative science, which ensures universal benefits from scientific advances, such as studies of diseases that adversely affect underserved populations from specific ancestries, and promotes diversity among researchers toward more inclusive and comprehensive outcomes.
