Live The Mission

The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative encourages all employees to “live the mission” through a dedication to service both inside and outside of CZI. Our Life of Service Gift empowers employees who reach key anniversaries with funding to support non-profits they choose directly. These personal stories capture the spirit of service that drives our work at CZI.

Until there is a world where there are no wars and no one is forced to leave their home to secure a better life for themselves and their families, I hope that we can open our minds and hearts to helping others who make the difficult journey from a home lost to a new home found.

I volunteer my time and expertise to the local school district to support improved outcomes for the students in my community. I believe that being present and a resource is most important. The first organization I selected is TEAM GRS because I love how the organization uses media and sports to teach lessons, and values to young people. Providing mentors and principles for success to help them “break the trap.” Next, I sit on a local parent group called D3A, which focuses on improving the support and experience for African American students in my local school district. The goal of my donation to the New Havens School Foundation is to increase the amount of scholarship money that can be provided for the upcoming year.
I volunteer my time and expertise to the local school district to support improved outcomes for the students in my community. I believe that being present and a resource is most important.
I believe that being close to the work is most important. The Mission District was a very important part of my life. I grew up surrounded by the richness and beauty of my Latino-Chicano culture, went to elementary and middle school there, and later worked in the community through my college years and beyond. As someone who worked and went to school in the Mission, I am not only touched by the efforts being made by Carnaval SF and the Latino Task Force but extremely proud and inspired by the continual leadership, dedication, and commitment of the community organizers, who consistently show up and engage the community to preserve our culture, language, traditions, and provide culturally competent services.

Supporting public education has been a huge part of my life since my daughter started kindergarten in 2008. I followed her through elementary, middle, and high school, volunteering all along the way; she's in her second year of college now and I've made a full-circle return to her elementary school, where I am volunteering again.
