The organization I chose to support is HERI Kenya after working with them as a postdoc in the LaBeaud Lab at Stanford. Community members were motivated to improve their environment and protect their health and I worked with my colleagues to write a small grant to empower local entrepreneurs, artists, and students to engage in environmental clean up and track the health impacts. Out of that project grew a much longer term project to support the local community in making this a sustainable project. I am proud to continue supporting this work through HERI Kenya.
Community members were motivated to improve their environment and protect their health … I am grateful to continue supporting this community-led effort through HERI Kenya.
I chose to work with CZI because its mission aligned with my values of creating a future for everyone. Specifically, I am trained as a scientist in epidemiology. By working with the infectious disease team to build Chan Zuckerberg ID and Chan Zuckerberg GEN EPI products for scientists like me, I am able to stay close to the work while in the office. By continuing to stay involved in arbovirology as an executive council member on the American Committee on Arthropod-Borne and Zoonotic Viruses (ACAV) at ASTMH, and contributing to my post-doc lab through their non-profit, the Health and Environmental Research Institute in Kenya, I am able to stay close to the work in the community as well.
