The first organization I select for my Life of Service gift is Mission Science Workshop. Walking into Mission Science Workshop is like walking into a dream workshop. Tools, activities, and wondrous creatures fill every inch of the space. But their superpower is in their teachers, whose every interaction is based on unlocking the scientific questions and curiosity of each child that visits. Regardless of background, language, or knowledge, they put the magic of science in every child’s hand. Over 12,000 kids are impacted by their program each year.
The second organization is the Innocence Project. They leverage modern scientific capabilities to exonerate and fundamentally alter the lives of those wrongly convicted. I am inspired at how this team leverages the advances of science to correct injustices, while reforming systems to ensure these wrongful convictions don’t happen again. They combine science communication, education, policy reform, and technological tools in a focused effort to advance equity. No greater gift to society than that.
I believe in the power of science to educate, empower, and uplift communities when there is trusted and equal access to process and products of scientific research.
I believe in the power of science to educate, empower, and uplift communities when there is trusted and equal access to process and products of scientific research. I’ve dedicated my life to breaking down the divides that exist between scientists and communities to showcase the power of their partnership. This often shows up in service projects like organizing the March for Science, co-hosting the science and society podcast “Inquiring Minds,” and volunteering as a scientist partner for teachers in the San Francisco school district.
