Education Initiative Privacy Principles
At the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI), we believe every child should enter into adulthood with the skills and abilities they need to reach their full potential — and that every teacher is equipped with the tools and resources they need to help get them there.
That’s why we partner with Gradient Learning to build tools that empower teachers to better meet the individual needs of every student — and to ensure adherence to strong student privacy practices.
In addition to our grantmaking support and collaboration on integrating the science of learning and development, CZI’s education technology team provides pro bono technology support by building and maintaining online tools that help teachers tailor their instruction to meet each student’s unique needs.
As part of our partnership with Gradient Learning, CZI works as a service provider —with privacy and security top of mind — to improve the technology that enables teachers, schools and school districts to meet the needs of students. In order to fulfill our technical responsibilities, a limited number of CZI staff members who support these online tools need access to student, teacher, and parent data. We comply with Gradient Learning’s rigorous privacy and security policies that it enforces with all of its service providers for tools like Summit Learning.
CZI is committed to protecting student privacy, and to building trust with parents, teachers, and students through transparency.
We have signed onto and follow the set of principles established by the Student Privacy Pledge intended to safeguard student privacy, including responsible stewardship, protection, and transparent handling of student personal information. In addition to the Pledge, the principles below both guide our work with Gradient Learning and our values as we collaborate with other education partners and grantees. We encourage all grantees and partners to adopt similar principles in their work to ensure student data is protected while used to further student learning.
