Bioimaging Network for the Advancement of Biomedical Research (BioIMG Net)

Award Expanding Global Access to Bioimaging

Project Summary

The BioImaging Network of Minas Gerais (BioIMG Net) is a pioneering initiative designed to strengthen collaboration between multi-user microscopy facilities within the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, and then expand this effort to other regions of Brazil and Latin America. BioIMG Net is a branch of the Microscopy and Microanalysis Network of Minas Gerais (RMic), which focuses on both bioimaging and materials imaging and analysis. RMic’s goals are to bring the microscopy community together to share information and expertise and improve access to microscopy (optical, electron and scanning probe microscopy). This transformation in the field required several initiatives such as: acquiring state-of-the-art instruments; training technicians to be proficient in the preparation and analysis of samples; sponsoring symposia and workshops to build capacity in cutting-edge microscopy techniques; and forming a group of researchers to design a strategic plan that addresses the challenges faced by the imaging community in Minas Gerais.

The BioIMG Net project aims to obtain community, financial and political support for biomedical imaging. The team also seeks to share scientific knowledge and generate interest in bioimaging through bringing together universities and research institutes and engaging public schools and the general public. Ultimately, BioIMG hopes to support biomedical research that will have a direct, positive impact on the quality of life and medical care for people in Latin America.
