Proposed Work

Ocean Genomics can uniquely contribute to improving diversity and inclusion within genomics by establishing internship programs specifically targeted to underrepresented groups in open source technology development. Ocean Genomics seeks to leverage existing academic connections as well as establish new relationships with local and national organizations focused on underrepresented groups in science to create a paid, remote undergraduate internship program at Ocean Genomics to provide open source development expertise, industry experience, and networking opportunities. This program will partner with existing groups focused on creating opportunities for women, BIPOC, and LGBTQ+ groups. Ocean Genomics will advertise this program directly to these communities by leveraging existing social, professional, and academic organizations for these groups. This funding will support establishing paid internship opportunities at Ocean Genomics for development of open source technologies, including support for mentoring, as well as developing partnerships with organizations selected to build a targeted internship program for women, BIPOC, and LGBTQ+ communities.
